Here's what we know:

  • District officials identified the first case of COVID-19 in D.C., a rector at a Georgetown church, on March 8. GW confirmed its first case Wednesday, March 18 as a student living off campus.
  • Mayor Muriel Bowser declared both a public health emergency and a state of emergency March 11 and banned all gatherings of 250 people or more, including several National Cherry Blossom Festival events, two days later due to COVID-19.
  • WMATA has scaled back Metro service as employees in the District, including University staff, move to telework and remote work schedules.
  • Classes will move online after spring break for the rest of the semester. Students can opt to take courses on a pass/fail basis.
  • Students must leave residence halls by March 20 unless they apply and qualify for one of six exemptions by March 16. Officials revoked tap access to halls March 14 and announced they will conduct occupancy checks to ensure compliance.
  • Student Association elections are postponed until April 8 and 9 amid bans on student organization activities and on-campus gatherings of more than 100 students. Administrators have canceled all events in campus buildings for the rest of the semester.
  • All non-essential GW-affiliated travel has been suspended through July 1, and students returning from countries with a State Department Level 3 warning – including Iran, Italy, South Korea and China – must "self-isolate" off campus for 14 days. Several abroad programs have been canceled.
  • All spring A-10 sports have been canceled by the conference.
