Student organizations must resubmit budget requests, SA leaders say

Student Association leaders announced that all student organizations will be required to resubmit their budget requests for the 2020-21 academic year.

Student organizations originally submitted funding requests to the SA in April through Engage, and each year the SA allocates roughly $1.7 million to student organizations, according to the SA’s Facebook page. After officials announced most courses will be online for the fall semester, SA finance leaders said in an email to students Wednesday that they want to reevaluate organizations’ funding to support events that will now be held virtually.

“SA budget requests completed last spring were done with a very different year in mind,” the email states. “Because significant portions of SA allocations are tied to in-person events and operations, we believe it is necessary to conduct a new allocation process to support organizations in a way that best fits the new normal.”

The SA is wiping all originally distributed funds from a student organization’s account and all organizations intending to use SA funds for their events will resubmit their budget requests, according to the email. The application opened Aug. 5 and will close Aug. 21 at 12 p.m. EDT, and the SA finance committee will finalize funding on Aug. 24, the email states.

Student organizations will have the option to submit an appeal of the funds allotted to their organization between Aug. 24 and 29, according to the email. The portal to request a co-sponsorship fund for an event planned outside of an organization’s overall budget will be open for the entire semester, the email states.

“We understand many organizations wish to spend their funds on hosting virtual programming, and we are excited to support this effort,” the email states.
