Thank you for reading The Hatchet in 2017

Thank you for reading our stories and supporting the work we do. This year, our staff captured important moments in our community and broke news all year long.

We reported on University President Thomas LeBlanc’s agenda and brought you live coverage of his inauguration this semester. We were the first to report that the University is under federal Title IX investigation this summer and we’ve followed the men’s basketball team under new leadership this season.

And student issues remain at the forefront of our coverage. We brought you an analysis of student representation on campus and we reported the harassment scandal that rocked student elections last spring. We also covered students’ struggles to pay for meals on the dining plan and the impact rescinding DACA will have on students. And our editorial board has weighed in on big topics too – from female representation to racial hate on campuses.

This year was also a time of transition for The Hatchet. The staff started a new chapter this semester, moving to a new townhouse on campus. We also launched a podcast this spring and developed a free app for readers. And we have continued to receive recognition for our coverage. The Hatchet won four awards from the Society of Professional Journalists earlier this year and was named a finalist for best college newspaper in the Associated Collegiate Press’ annual Pacemaker competition.

But we cannot deliver the independent, original journalism for which we are known without the support of our readers. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for that loyalty.

We have provided high-quality coverage of GW and D.C. for more than 100 years, with talented alumni who move on to impressive careers around the globe. Now, independent student journalism is more important than ever before. To continue informing the community, we need your help.

As an entirely independent, nonprofit organization, we receive no funding from GW and rely completely on advertising revenue. Reader donations allow us to continue the work we do. All donations, large or small, make a difference. Please consider supporting student journalism with a tax-deductible donation this holiday season. You can make a donation here.

Thank you for your continued support and happy holidays from all of us at The GW Hatchet.
