Readers’ Pick: Arepa Zone and Roaming Rooster

Western Market’s newest resident, Bullfrog Bagels, stands out for its breakfast offerings among a vendor scene heavily dominated by dinner and lunch options.

Located across from Arepa Zone and next to Tigerella, Bullfrog Bagels has emerged as the new go-to for the college diet staple of bagels, a welcome addition to the lacking breakfast scene among the market’s vendors. The spot has all the classic bagel offerings – everything, poppy and cinnamon raisin to name a few – along with several cream cheese options and spreads like hummus, goat cheese and honey and sriracha mayo, in addition to hand-crafted “bagelwiches.”

A chalkboard menu with rainbow writing lists off the establishment’s menu items and adorns the register. Bullfrog offers the classic bacon, egg and cheese sandwich ($6.90), along with other combinations of egg and cheese that bring in new ingredients like corned beef ($8.75), avocado and turkey ($8.50) and hot pastrami ($8.75). The shop has several bagel varieties to choose from including plain, sesame, everything, poppy, salt, onion, cinnamon raisin, asiago multigrain, blueberry, pumpernickel and everything pumpernickel.

The star of the menu is Bullfrog’s Bagelwiches, a more filling meal that can serve as breakfast or lunch. Offerings include the vegetarian HAS ($7.20), made of hummus, avocado and sprouts. Meat lovers may prefer the Natitude ($10) which contains hot pastrami, swiss and Dijon mustard, or the Reuben ($9.50) with corned beef, house-made sauerkraut, swiss and 1000 Island sauce. Seafood options including a Salmon BLT ($10.00), Tuna Melt ($8.50) and Whitefish ($9.00) are available for fish lovers.

Pair any of these bagels with Zeke’s Coffee, which Bullfrog Bagels carries, for an ideal start to your morning. The sandwiches are individually wrapped in red and white checkered paper, making them easy to take and eat on the go if you have a class to run to, and the sandwich itself makes for the ideal meal to get you through a class without leaving you too full.

Once an empty space, Western Market has become a bustling center at the heart of Foggy Bottom. Bullfrog Bagels is a necessary addition to the breakfast options there by specializing in one thing, bagels, and doing it well. With Bullfrog Bagels, you know what you’re getting. Whether it’s a delectable spread of cream cheese between two halves of a bagel or a greasy combination of meats, cheeses and eggs, the bagel is sure to hit the spot every time, especially after a late night out.

The classic, college comfort food that Bullfrog Bagels is serving up makes them the best Western Market vendor.
