The Hatchet won best independent online student publication at the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual regional awards for student journalism earlier this month.

SPJ named The Hatchet winners in five categories and finalists in two at the 2022 Mark of Excellence Awards for Region 2, which covers D.C., Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Delaware. Regional winners will advance to the national stage of the SPJ awards spanning its 12 regions across the country, and the society will announce winners in “late spring,” according to its website.
