Water polo was defeated by Bucknell at the Smith Center this past Saturday.

The Colonials (5-6, 4-2 MAWPC) fell to the Bison (8-9, 3-4 MAWPC) in a 14–10 shootout. After a tightly contested first half, the Bison pulled ahead in the third quarter and held onto their lead despite an early fourth quarter offensive surge by GW.

Graduate student utility player Andras Levai netted three goals to go with three assists, followed by sophomore center Viktor Jovanovic and freshman utility player Andrija Sekulic also with three goals to their names. On the defensive side, sophomore goalkeeper Luca Castorina notched seven saves and three steals.

The Colonials drew 10 ejections in an aggressive match while senior utility player Nicholas Schroeder led the team with three ejections drawn. In the previous bout between the two teams Sept. 26, the Colonials emerged victorious in an 8–5 win over the Bison.

The Colonials fired into the first quarter of the game, racking up a 4–1 lead with less than five minutes to play in the period. However, Bucknell clawed their way back during the final minutes, scoring two straight goals to pull within one at 4–3.

In the second quarter, the Colonials padded their lead with another goal early, but the Bison managed to gain a 7–6 lead within the final two minutes of the quarter. Sekulic tied the game up for GW with just 36 seconds left before the half.

Bucknell dominated after the break, netting four straight goals to break the tie, beginning with a goal off a power play at the 6:43 mark. The Colonials continued to look for openings in the Bison defense but were unable to score more than a single goal throughout the entire third quarter.

The Bison held onto their lead in the fourth quarter as the Colonials sought to muscle their way back in the game. GW pulled back within a goal at 11–10 off a score from Jovanovic with just 2:29 remaining, before Bucknell consolidated their lead with three more goals to close out the game at 14–10 and claim the rematch.

The Colonials will hit the pool again Oct. 26 to face off against Navy. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
