MPD responds to suspicious package on 23rd Street, finding no hazardous materials

Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of a suspicious package on campus Thursday before clearing the scene with no findings of hazardous materials.

An MPD spokesperson said officers responded to reports of a suspicious package near a trash can on the 500 block of 23rd Street and investigated the scene before confirming the item was safe. The University issued a GW Alert shortly after 11:30 a.m., notifying community members about police activity in the area and warning them to avoid the scene.

The University issued a second alert nearly 30 minutes later, announcing that the scene had been cleared.

“ALL CLEAR!” the alert read. “Police cleared the scene at 500 block of 23rd Street NW. Report any suspicious activity to GWPD 202-994-6111.”
