Thousands surround White House rejoicing historic presidential election

Minutes after Joe Biden was announced the 46th U.S. president Saturday morning, thousands flooded the streets in celebration.

Biden punched his ticket to the White House after five days of ballot counting in several key battleground states. CNN first projected the results late Saturday morning, announcing that he secured Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

Students, D.C. natives and visitors surrounded the White House for impromptu festivities, popping bottles of champagne, dancing and chanting in the street. Here are some highlights from the day:
