DHS partners with GW for homeland security technology program

The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate tapped GW to house a center of excellence for the organization to train graduate students in homeland security technology.

The DHS Science and Technology Directorate, which oversees technology in homeland security, will provide the University with at least $5.8 million to fund three groups of 25 students in a Masters of Business program focusing on security technology transition, according to a DHS press release Monday. GW will supplement its core courses for the MBA program with technology-focused content and will utilize “real-world case-study learning” relevant for public and private research, the release states.

William Bryan, the senior DHS official performing the duties of the undersecretary for science and technology, said transitioning security technologies from applied research to prototype development has been challenging. He said partnering with GW will ensure a team of professionals can fulfill DHS’s technology requirements.

“By developing an educational program tailored to address the department’s security technology needs, the MBA STT pilot program will produce a pipeline of high-quality professionals prepared to apply invaluable knowledge to the department’s operational components and the broader homeland security enterprise,” Bryan said in the release.
