In past years, players and fans filled the Smith Center to kick off the men’s and women’s basketball seasons.

GDub Madness will not kick off the 2019-20 basketball season, an athletic department spokesperson confirmed.

The event – originally named Colonial Invasion, later changed to Colonial Madness and eventually called GDub Madness – was replaced with a men’s basketball team open practice and an exhibition game on the women’s side against MercyHurst Sunday, athletic department spokesman Kevin Burke said in an email.

In past years, GDub Madness took place during Colonials Weekend and introduced fans to both rosters, with performances from the First Ladies and GW Cheer.

Fans who attended the event last season had an opportunity to receive GW merchandise. Players and fans opened the 2017-18 season competing in activities on the court and dancing with the First Ladies.

The women’s squad will get its first taste of competition Sunday in an exhibition with MercyHurst and the men’s squad will face off with Hood College Friday.
