Verizon launches 5G cellular service in the District

Verizon subscribers on campus will now have access to 5G service, the next generation of cellular technology.

The telecommunications company launched 5G capability Wednesday in several D.C. neighborhoods, including Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle, the technology news outlet CNET reported. The service area, which will expand in ‘months ahead,’ currently includes GW’s campus, GW Hospital and landmarks throughout the District, like the National Mall, Union Station and the Georgetown and Southwest waterfronts, according to CNET.

The 5G network will be available to cell phone users in several other D.C. neighborhoods and in Crystal City in Arlington County, CNET reported. D.C. is one of four cities that received the upgraded service, alongside Atlanta, Detroit and Indianapolis, but received the most “expansive” 5G rollout, according to CNET.

Verizon is the first major telecommunications company to launch 5G service in the District. The company plans to expand its 5G network in 30 cities across the country, CNET reported.
