Two people died and one person is injured in a car accident outside The Shops at 2000 Penn Wednesday night, emergency respondents said.

At about 11:39 p.m. four suppression and rescue vehicles and several emergency medical services vehicles responded to a call about an overturned car with people trapped inside on the 2000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, said Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services respondents declared two individuals dead on the scene and one was transported to an area trauma center in critical condition, Maggiolo said.

He said about 30 D.C. FEMS personnel responded to the call in total.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Eduardo Delgado identified the victims as Thomas Dwight Spriggs, 42, and Jesus Antonio Llanes-Dario, 63.

Delgado said Park Police officials made “exhaustive efforts” to notify the victims’ next of kin but the victims do not appear to have fixed addresses. An investigation is ongoing awaiting toxicology results, he said.

GW Police Department dispatcher William Grass said neither students nor faculty were involved in the accident.

University spokeswoman Crystal Nosal said the crash had “no known connection” to the University.

Parth Kotak and Zach Schonfeld contributed reporting.
