The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority fare system will no longer permit riders to complete rides on the bus or subway with a negative balance on SmarTrip cards.

The Metro’s Blue, Silver and Orange lines will experience maintenance delays this weekend before extending operations for New Year’s Eve.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has scheduled Blue and Orange line trains to run every 20 minutes on Saturday and Sunday with single-tracking between the Smithsonian and Federal Center SW stations. Silver Line trains will operate from Wiehle-Reston East to Ballston only this weekend and are also scheduled every 20 minutes, according to a WMATA alert.

WMATA plans to run an extended schedule for New Year’s Eve and a regular Sunday schedule for New Year’s Day. On Dec. 31, the Metro will operate from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m., and on Jan. 1, the Metro will operate from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Metro’s Red, Green and Yellow lines are scheduled for regular operation.
