MPD arrests man outside SEH for stealing woman’s backpack

A Metropolitan Police Department officer arrested a man Wednesday for stealing a woman’s backpack outside the Science and Engineering Hall, according to an MPD report.

At about 8:47 p.m., an MPD officer responded to a call of an assault between two men at the intersection of 23rd and I streets NW. Upon arrival, officers saw a bystander holding down a man on the ground as a woman stood nearby, the report states.

The woman told officers that the man, 27-year-old Eric Jerome Nelson, had snatched her backpack, which contained her wallet, driver’s license and various personal items. Nelson allegedly snatched the bag from the ground next to her and took off running toward 23rd Street NW, according to the report.

The woman ran after Nelson and yelled that he took her bag, and a witness tackled him to the ground and held him there until police arrived and placed him in handcuffs, the report states.

Nelson told police that he took the bag but claimed that he did not run. He complained to officers of discomfort in his left hand because of a previous injury and was taken to GW Hospital, but he refused medical attention, according to the report.
