MPD, GWPD officers respond to armed robbery near Academic Center

Updated: June 2, 2018 at 4:37 p.m.

Metropolitan Police Department officers and campus authorities are searching for a man who committed an armed robbery near the Academic Center Friday night, according to a GW Alert issued just after midnight Saturday.

The suspect – a 5-foot-8-inch black man weighing approximately 215 pounds – committed the robbery at about 10:30 p.m., the alert states. An MPD police report lists the time of the incident as 11:30 p.m.

University spokeswoman Maralee Csellar said the incident was reported to GW officials at about 10:30 p.m.

The suspect approached the victim at the corner of 22nd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, “brandished” a handgun and demanded money from the victim, who told the suspect he didn’t have any cash on him. The suspect walked the victim to an ATM on 22nd Street, according to the report.

The victim withdrew $140 and gave it to the suspect, who then said he wanted to give the victim “some video games and other items.” The suspect entered his contact information into the victim’s phone and told the victim to text him, the report states.

The suspect fled the scene toward Pennsylvania Avenue, but both MPD and GW Police Department officers are continuing to patrol the area. Authorities determined there is no immediate danger to campus, according to the alert.

The suspect was wearing a dark shirt and dark jeans and had close-cut hair. He had no facial hair, the alert states.

This post was updated to include additional information about the robbery from an MPD police report and comment from a University spokeswoman.
