D.C. tuition aid program – slashed in Trump’s budget – fully funded in House spending bill

A college tuition program for D.C. high schoolers will be fully funded next fiscal year in a spending bill being considered in Congress.

The budget for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant, which provides financial aid for D.C. students to lower the cost of tuition at universities in the District and around the country, was slashed to $30 million for fiscal year 2018 and eliminated in fiscal year 2019 in the Trump administration’s budget blueprint released earlier this year.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., the District’s non-voting member of Congress, successfully lobbied to get $40 million in federal funding for DCTAG included in the $1.3 trillion “omnibus” spending bill, which passed the House of Representatives Thursday. The bill would give DCTAG the same budget that it received this fiscal year.

In a press release, Norton called the bill a “major win” for the District.

“I am particularly relieved that we were able to face down the administration and secure the full $40 million funding for DCTAG,” Norton said in the release. “District residents got what they deserved in this omnibus.”

After the Trump administration proposed defunding the program, Mayor Muriel Bower launched a campaign to save it and D.C. students said support from the program was crucial to help lower-income students continue their education. Nearly all GW undergraduates who were high school students in the District receive funding from DCTAG.

The spending bill now moves onto the Senate, where it is expected to pass this weekend.
