Major law firm to open headquarters in planned 2100 Penn complex

A major international law firm will be the primary tenant of the new GW-owned 2100 Pennsylvania Ave. complex.

WilmerHale entered into a long-term lease agreement with Boston Properties, the real estate firm overseeing the project, securing a 288,000 square-foot space for a new headquarters in the complex, which is about two blocks from their current D.C. location at 1875 Pennsylvania Ave., the Washington Business Journal reported Wednesday.

“We are honored by the trust placed in Boston Properties by WilmerHale and the Savills Studley team to create what we believe will set the standard for new office development in Washington,” Jon Kaylor, the senior vice president of leasing for Boston Properties, told the Business Journal.

WilmerHale represents several major Washington figures including President Donald Trump’s daughter and White House Special Adviser Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel selected to lead the Russia investigation, also previously worked at WilmerHale, Politico reported.

The complex, which is set to open in 2019, is a major part of the University’s investment strategy. Officials hope to use money made from GW’s ownership of the building to fund campus projects.

The building, which will combine Rice Hall and the current 2100 Pennsylvania Ave. building, will include a daycare facility, 3,500-square-foot penthouse and a fitness center, according to the Business Journal.

WilmerHale spokeswoman Molly Nunes said the firm will occupy about two-thirds of the building, which will include retail and dining vendors at the street level. She said the headquarters is scheduled to open in August of 2022.

“We are excited to continue our presence on Pennsylvania Avenue and work with Boston Properties and George Washington University to create a spectacular home for our lawyers and staff,” Robert Novick, a co-managing partner of WilmerHale, said in a statement. “Our new building is in a thriving part of Washington, DC and will reflect WilmerHale’s priorities for efficient and collaborative space to better serve our clients.”
