Construction on Vern Express route likely to cause traffic delays

The trip up to the Mount Vernon pool is likely to take a little longer for the next week.

DC Water crews are repairing a sewer line along Canal Road between Whitehurst Freeway and Foxhall Road, part of the Vern Express route to the Mount Vernon Campus. The work will begin Wednesday evening and is expected to last until June 28, WTOP reported.

Crews will block a left outbound lane and part of an inbound left turn lane along Canal Road as part of the construction. Traffic could back up onto M and K streets and the Whitehurst Freeway during the project, according to WTOP.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Towpath trail that runs next to the road will remain open during the construction but starting in July, pedestrians will use a detour around the work area, DC Water spokesman Vincent Morris said in a statement.

“Bikers, walkers, and joggers will be able to make use of a detour we’re constructing around the trail, so that there’s no interruption in the use and the enjoyment of the C&O trail during the construction,” he said in the statement. “We did this because we know the trail is hugely popular in the summertime and we really wanted to avoid a closure.

The work is designed to prevent sewage from overflowing into the Potomac River, Morris said.

The Vern Express Twitter account has so far not reported any traffic delays as a result of the repairs.
