Adeduntan hired as women’s basketball assistant coach

The women’s basketball coaching staff added a former Northeastern assistant Monday who is known for turning around programs and recruiting strong players.

Ganiyat Adeduntan, who has served as an assistant coach at Northeastern’s women’s basketball program since 2014 and previously served as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Wheelock College, is the second assistant coach to be added to the program in the last week.

“She is a perfect fit for GW and our players and coaches will certainly benefit from her overall experiences as a coach and in life,” head coach Jennifer Rizzotti said in a release Monday.

Adeduntan’s hiring comes after shifts in the program’s coaching staff.

Former associate head coach Bill Sullivan resigned from his position Tuesday, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. Former assistant director of operations Kevin DeMille was promoted to the position of assistant coach Thursday.

Adeduntan was a key factor in turning around the women’s basketball program at Northeastern during her first two seasons on the coaching staff. After winning only four games in the 2014-15 season, the Huskies went on to win 15 games in the 2015-16 season.

At Northeastern, where she also earned a doctor of nursing practice degree in 2012, Adeduntan helped develop a recruitment plan to bring in top players.

Prior to her stint at Northeastern, Adeduntan spent two years at the helm of Wheelock College’s women’s basketball program. She led the Wildcats to their first playoff appearance in 12 years in the 2013-14 season, matched the school record for wins in a season and set a new school record in conference victories.

In addition to her coaching experience, Adeduntan has racked up a few accolades of her own for her stand-out play as a guard at Florida State.

As a Seminole, Adeduntan became just one of 19 players in Florida State history to score more than 1,000 career points. Adeduntan earned a spot on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman team as an honorable mention in the 2002-03 season and was an All-ACC honorable mention selection for the 2004-05 season. She was named to the 2005 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III first team.

Adeduntan said in the release that the emphasized importance on both academics and athletics made the program appealing to her and she looks forward to working with the team.

“Coach Rizzotti is someone that I have watched from afar over the years and I am grateful that she has given me this opportunity,” Adeduntan said.
