Two arrested after quarrel over cigarettes outside of Starbucks

Two people were arrested Tuesday morning after one woman stole cigarettes from a man, who then hit her on the back of the head to get them back, according to a Metropolitan Police Department report.

Emmalynn Sharif, 26, was arrested for second degree theft and Abdi Osman, 54, was arrested for simple assault outside of the Gelman Library Starbucks at about 6:42 a.m., according an MPD Second District arrest report.

Osman told officers that he knows Sharif from a soup kitchen but tries to avoid her because they have a “bad history,” the report states.

He told officers that he got a cup of coffee and went back into the store to get a refill when he left his property outside on a table, according to the report. Osman said he then noticed Sharif taking cigarettes out of his bag.

Osman then said, “Why you take my cigarettes? Give me my cigarettes!” and when Sharif began to run away, he chased her and hit her on the back of the head, the report states.

University Police Department officers witnessed Osman hit Sharif before MPD responded to the scene, according to the report. Both were transported to the Second District station for processing, the document states.
