A natural gem in the middle of a big city, Rock Creek Park is one of the few places in the District free from the hustle and bustle of city life.

A 10-minute drive, a short walk up 23rd or a short ride to the Van Ness Metro station gets you to the beginning of the hiking trail, although the park also offers horseback riding and bicycle trails. The park has more than 32 miles of trails that crisscross through little creeks and woods, making for a scenic and peaceful walk – perfect for catching up with a friend or even just walking silently next to each other enjoying nature.

Signs all over the trail keep hikers in the right direction and let you know the distance to the next main road, making it easy to plan your hike. The trails are only for walking, though – bicyclists will have to stick to the paved roads, which are off-limits to motor vehicles.

The park’s boat center is also open every day from May through October, so come here to kayak or canoe.

To revisit childhood memories with your friend, you can also try out the playground, located at 16th and Kennedy streets, which is equipped with fields for soccer, football and field hockey in addition to slides and jungle gyms. On a warm day, be sure to bring a picnic to enjoy at the tables by the main creek.
