GW voted best D.C.-area college athletics program

GW’s sports teams are tops among colleges in and around the District, at least according to readers of The Washington Post.

In the Best Of D.C. issue, released by the Post’s magazine Express Thursday, the Colonials were voted the best D.C.-area college athletics, and the Charles E. Smith center was voted the best place to see a D.C.-area college basketball game.

Maryland and Georgetown came in second and third, respectively in the best athletics category, but the Colonials edged both area rivals because of the women’s basketball program, Express sports editor Jeffrey Tomik wrote.

“Their 19-game winning streak tied for the second-longest ever for the program. They finished the season 29-4, winning the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament titles. And they made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. The men’s side didn’t do too badly either, finishing 22-13 and getting to the second round of the NIT,” Tomik wrote.

Tomik also referenced the Smith Center’s size, relatively small at 5,000 compared with the 18,000 seats available for Georgetown games at the Verizon center and Maryland games at the Xfinity Center, the second and third picks, as a reason fans preferred the more “intimate” arena in Foggy Bottom.

In other college sports categories, Georgetown’s Jack the Bulldog (he skateboards) took home top marks in the mascot category, while Maryland was recognized for having the best fans.

GW’s soccer teams also got some recognition from Washington Post soccer reporter Steven Goff Thursday, who put the women’s team in second place and the men’s team in fifth in his ranking of the 12 hottest D.C.-area college soccer teams.
