Report: 95 percent of employees’ family members eligible for benefits

Ninety-five percent of University employees’ spouses, partners and children are eligible for healthcare benefits through GW, a report said Monday.

In April, the University unveiled a plan to confirm healthcare benefit eligibility for GW employees’ dependents – or the children and spouses of University employees – and concluded that 95 percent of dependents can opt in to medical and vision coverage and insurance plans.

Sabrina Ellis, the vice president for human resources, said in the release that the human resources department runs these verifications as a way to ensure that healthcare plans are being used effectively. This report was completed by Secova, a company that analyzes company’s benefits for its employees.

“We sincerely appreciate everyone’s participation in the verification process,” Ellis said in the release.

John Kosky, the associate vice president for human resources talent management, said in the release that the verification takes place between every five and seven years. He added that the verification process saved GW roughly $700,000 in health care costs.

University employees have raised concerns about their healthcare coverage for more than year. Ellis clarified employees’ benefits last month and explained updates to their plans, including dollar-for-dollar matching on the amount that employees pay into their health insurance.

At Friday’s Faculty Senate meeting, faculty passed a resolution in favor of improving benefits for both faculty and staff.
