Navy Yard given all clear after report of active shooter

The Washington Navy Yard was given the all clear Thursday morning following a report of an active shooter on the base.

A call was placed from inside a building at the Navy Yard around 7:30 a.m. for “possible sounds of gun shots,” according to a Metropolitan Police Department release. MPD then requested assistance from other law enforcement departments.

“At this time we have completed our search of the building and have found no evidence of a shooting or injured personnel,” the release said.

Two years ago, an active shooter opened fire inside an building at the Navy Yard, killing 12 before being killed by police. A GW alumnus and a parent of two GW graduates died in the shooting.

Ward 5 Council member Kenyan McDuffie said in a statement that while the reports of a shooting Thursday were “unsubstantiated, the unfortunate reality is that we must continue to stay vigilant and ready to respond to incidents and threats.”

McDuffie added that as D.C. residents approach July Fourth weekend, they can “help our first responders” by reporting suspicious activity to 911.

“I want to especially thank the brave women and men who work as first responders,” he said in the statement. “As we move forward and review the after-action reports, I will continue to work with all of our agencies to be sure they have the training and technology needed to continue to protect our city.”
