GW to reconsider package services contractor

GW will sign a new contract with a company to manage students’ mail and packages, looking to make the delivery and pickup process smoother.

The University’s contract with its mail provider, Novitex Enterprise Solutions, will expire this summer, opening up a competitive bid process. GW has asked companies to pitch how their use of technology could improve efficiency, along with other potential improvements, University spokesman David Andrews said.

Novitex also contracts its services to George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The company operates two offices, one at 2025 F St. and one in West Hall on the Mount Vernon Campus. Students have complained of long lines and slow service at both offices, which are particularly overloaded at the beginning of each semester with influxes of orders from Amazon and other online providers.

The University Police Department investigated multiple incidents of mail theft last year, but GW’s police chief declined to comment then on exactly how many pieces of mail were opened or the value of the stolen items.

Police investigated the theft of gift cards and cash at the University of Maryland last year, eventually charging a mail facility employee.

This post was updated March 21 at 10:30 p.m. to reflect the following correction:
The headline of this post incorrectly stated that GW would pick a new company to run its package services. When GW resigns its contractor, it could keep its current company. We regret this error.
