Police investigated a report of a man on American University’s campus with a gun Wednesday.

Officials announced a suspect was in custody at 9:25 p.m., about an hour after they had asked students to shelter in place, according to university alerts.

Metropolitan Police Department public information officer Hugh Carew said the man was not an active shooter. He said the suspect was an off-duty police officer.

Amy Deavers, a dispatcher for American University’s public safety office, said both MPD and campus officers responded to the scene. Police had a picture of the suspect, who possibly had a weapon in his back pocket, she said.
