A political science professor’s blog, which gained attention during the 2012 election, will join the Washington Post, he announced Monday.

John Sides, co-founder of the five-year-old political analysis blog The Monkey Cage, told The Hatchet that joining one of the nation’s largest newspapers will grow the blog’s readership and allow it to have more impact.

The blog, which turns political headlines and memes into data and analysis, soared in popularity during the 2012 election cycle.

The blog averages about 200,000 views per month – with double that traffic during election season, Sides said.

Sides is one of four other contributors to the blog, all professors in D.C. and New York City.

It will be separate from the Post’s well-known Wonkblog, which also offers deep analysis, but more specifically on policy.

“I suspect that there will often be opportunities for cross-pollination and dialogue across the two blogs,” Sides said in an email.
