Massive construction project in West End neighborhood moves forward

A $150 million housing and retail project in the West End neighborhood will finally move forward after a city court ended a months-long legal stalemate Tuesday.

Local activists brought the project to court last year, claiming that the city was not properly compensated for the deal. The D.C. Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that it  would not overturn the project, which will also renovate the West End library and fire station.

A handful of development firms, including EastBanc In., agreed to construct the library and fire station without pay in exchange for the District-owned land.

The site is located at the corner of 24th and L streets, past Washington Circle. The library’s temporary location at the Watergate will open in November.

The project has earned support from D.C. Council members and the Foggy Bottom’s neighborhood advisory group.

Foggy Bottom’s representative on the city council Jack Evans has focused on the renovations for its retail and housing additions. At least 160 apartments will be added.

Renovation will begin before the end of the year.
