Spike Mendelsohn’s newest D.C. venture: French-styled steak and fries

He’s tackled the good stuff of American cuisine, and now Chef Spike Mendelsohn will delve into foreign foodie territory.

The co-owner of Capitol Hill restaurants Good Stuff Eatery and We, The Pizza will open the Paris-inspired eatery Béarnaise this Friday.

Putting a modern, Westernized spin on steak frites, the menu will boast three cuts of steak and, best of all, unlimited frites on the side.

The former “Top Chef: Chicago” and “Top Chef: All Stars” competitor said Béarnaise will emulate the style and décor of the archetypal Parisian bistro, with French works of art adorning the eatery’s walls.

He will run the restaurant with his sister, Micheline Mendelsohn, who is also his publicist. The word first got out about their steak frites venture in February 2012, when Mendelsohn’s email to first lady Michelle Obama was leaked to Washington City Paper.

Béarnaise will open July 5 at 315 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, and is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
