Tony Taylor to play summer ball with Miami Heat

Former Colonial point guard Tony Taylor will officially play summer ball as a member of this year’s NBA title winners, the Miami Heat, the team released on its website Tuesday.

Though the Heat summer squad will play in both the Orlando Pro Summer League and the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Taylor will not be joining them until competition in Sin City begins. The Heat will begin practicing this week, before competition in Orlando begins on July 7, and play in Las Vegas begins on July 13.

The invite represents a chance for Taylor, like other NBA prospects, to get noticed and signed.

ESPN New York reported last week that Taylor could have received an invite from the New York Knicks’ summer league team. After playing last year with the Oklahoma City Thunder’s development league team, the Tulsa 66ers, Taylor has also supposedly grabbed a summer league spot from the pro squad, the SB Nation blog RidiculousUpside reported in April.

Last season on the 66ers, Taylor earned All-NBADL Rookie Third-Team honors, while also helping the team win a playoff series. He averaged 7 points on 42 percent shooting and 3.2 assists per game.
