GW could not have beaten the University of Maryland Eastern Shore any more decisively Sunday.

The Colonials blanked the Hawks in all six singles and two doubles matches on their way to their second sweep of the season and sixth consecutive win.

Due to inclement weather, the match was moved from the GW tennis courts to an indoor facility at Montclair Country Club in Virginia. Family, friends and alumni created a lively atmosphere and were engaged in the action, as the four-court indoor facility features spectator seating in between two courts.

The Colonials cruised to four 6-0, 6-0 singles victories and won the final two by default. First flight freshman Lana Robins defeated Reine Fowajuh and Stephanie Wei, also a freshman, topped Valentina Collazos in the no. 2 matchup. Then, No. 3 senior Mimi Hamling and no. 4 senior Dorota Lysienia took down their UMES opponents decisively.

GW was equally dominant in doubles play, winning the doubles point with two 8-0 sweeps. The no. 1 pair of Hamling and Robins beat the UMES no. 1 duo of Collazos and Fowajuh and freshman Christina Carpenter partnered with Wei to top Adrams and Jennings.

Head coach Dawn Buth said the team’s success was a result of concentrated effort and efficient play.

“We’ve continued to improve our focus throughout the season, and our players did a nice job of minimizing the free points we gave UMES and keeping their focus throughout the entirety of the singles and doubles matches,” Buth said.

Sunday’s victory came just a day after the Colonials beat the Drexel Dragons 6-1 at the Drexel Armory. Buth will look to take advantage of momentum to keep her squad in the moment as they look forward to a spring break trip to California for matches against Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara.

“Any successful team understands that momentum can also change in an instant so great teams use momentum to their advantage while remaining vigilant,” Buth said. “Our team is taking all the positive pieces of this momentum but staying strictly focused on the process and staying in the present.”
