Profile on Style

Profile on Style is a weekly post that explores the motivations behind GW’s fashion trends. We’ll show you the most interesting aspects of GW style, and then try to make some sense of it all. Keep your eyes open for a reporter and photographer walking around, because you might become the latest trendsetter.

Rachael Petty. Michael Boosalis | Hatchet Photographer

This post was written by Hatchet reporter Audrey Sze.

Name: Rachael Petty
Year:
2016
Major:
Political Science
Hometown:
Bermuda
Outfit:
Scarf, vintage; top, Urban Outfitters; shades, Ray Ban; bracelets, Chan Luu, Gorjana, flea markets, vintage

As we enjoy the last traces of the summer heat, we were more than delighted to run into Rachael, whose bright outfit and killer accessories almost had us thinking it was still summer break. Carrying a certain beachy vibe, she rocks a basic white T-shirt and jean combo by layering a vintage coral blue scarf, classic aviators and a slew of vibrant bangles. The fun colors, the vintage watch and the beaded details give a youthful, energetic air to this eye-catching look.

Daisy Derooy. Michael Boosalis | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Daisy Derooy
Year:
2016
Major:
Biomedical engineering
Hometown:
West Palm Beach, Fla.
Outfit:
Shorts, shoes, Urban Outfitters; top, Nordstrom; bag, Michael Kors

Nothing better exemplifies understated cool like a pair of high-waisted denim cut-offs that dominated the runways of Fashion Week 2012 S/S. Freshman Daisy Derooy was making her round in the salad bar in J Street when we spotted her effortless style. Pairing washed cut-offs with a lacy pale-pink top and brown gladiator sandals, she perfectly pulls off the pale palette, exuding a modern feminine air. To complete her outfit, she wears a baby blue Michael Kors crossbody bag and paints her nails a matching Tiffany-blue color.

Elena Kim. Michael Boosalis | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Elena Kim
Year:
2013
Major:
International affairs
Hometown:
Los Angeles
Outfit:
Top, vintage; pants, H&M; shoes, unknown

Senior Elena Kim’s sizzling red hot pants alone were nearly enough to give us a heat stroke in Kogan Plaza, where we spotted the stylish trendsetter. Accesorizing those sultry capris with a pair of classic, versatile silver ballerina flats and a chiffon cheetah-print shirt – a vintage piece courtesy of Elena’s grandmother – Elena elegantly reinvents a classic look with a new palette, adding a refreshing pop of color and a daring print.
