Bobby Lucas, Jr., Washington Nationals minor leaguer and former Colonials southpaw, will rejoin GW this fall as coordinator of baseball operations.

Assistant head coach and interim head coach Tom Sheridan announced Friday that Lucas will be back in a GW uniform, overseeing student managers, travel and recruiting plans, staff activities and video services.

“I am thrilled to be back on campus and giving back to the program that afforded me many great opportunities,” Lucas said. “I look forward to working with Coach Sheridan and [assistant coach Dave] Lorber and being a part of the new and exciting culture of the GW baseball program.”

He will stay on the job until he reports to the Nationals’ minor league camp in the spring. His addition continues a coaching staff overhaul after former head coach Steve Mrowka was fired at the end of last season. GW has yet to announce the hire of a new head coach.

Lucas took the mound this summer in his second season in professional baseball for the Hagerstown Suns, the Nationals’ single A team. He racked up 36 strikeouts in 29 innings, but had trouble with his control, walking 31 batters. He finished with a 7.67 earned run average for the Suns.

He sported a 2.52 ERA in seven games for the Nationals’ Gulf Coast League team in the first part of the season.

Lucas, who graduated in 2010, is eighth on the Colonials’ all-time strikeout list, whiffing 233 hitters during his GW career.

“I feel he is a great role model for our current roster and is a great fit for this position before he resumes his career in the spring,” Sheridan said.
