Citywide campaign promotes transgender rights

District officials launched a campaign to promote the rights of transgender people Thursday, which city officials say is the first of its kind in the country.

The D.C. Office of Human Rights released five ads with transgender individuals describing their life in the city, with activities like shopping at Eastern Market and wandering the Smithsonian museums, to help people connect to the community, according to the DCist.

Mayor Vincent Gray called the government-funded campaign “groundbreaking” in a release and said it will raise awareness about hate crimes and discrimination. The ads will appear around bus stops around the city.

Five bias-related crimes against transgenders have been reported in the first half of 2012 – a rise of 150 percent compared to the same period last year, the DCist reported.

The city’s police department came under fire earlier this year from transgender activists  citing low closure rates of crimes against the trans community.
