Fall sports are getting underway, and we’ve got summaries of three opening weekends below:

Cross Country

The women’s cross country team finished second at the Seagull Opener Saturday, and the men’s team finished third at the event.

The women’s program saw three top-10 finishes at the invitational. Senior Heather Stevens crossed the finish line in a career-best third place out of 146 runners, running the course in 22:35. Fellow senior Juliana Stern placed sixth, running the course in 23:03, followed closely by freshman Caroline Wolfe, who finished in seventh overall.

The men’s team saw four top-20 finishes at the race, including sophomore John Louis-Pane, who ended in 14th place of 116 runners, completing the course in 27:13. Freshman Kyle Ames finished 17th, followed by senior Alex Dadds, who finished 18th, and freshman Ryan Tucker, who was 20th.

Men’s Water Polo

The men’s water polo team opened its season with a perfect weekend, posting a 4-0 record at the Navy Open, the first time since 2006 the team has had that opening record.

GW officially began its season with a 21-5 routing of Penn State Behrend Saturday, and then narrowly defeated Iona 11-10 for its second victory. Eleven different Colonials found the back of the net against Penn State Behrend, led by freshman Jonah Dowd, who scored four goals, two assists, two penalties drawn and a steal. Against Iona, graduate student Milos Purkovic added five goals, while senior Cameron Illes saved 13 shots in goal.

Sunday, the Colonials remained perfect, defeating first Notre Dame (Ohio) 16-9 and then Gannon 18-6. Freshman Bogdan Petkovic led the Colonials against Notre Dame, adding seven points on four goals and three assists to go along with three steals, and Illes recorded nine saves. Against Gannon, junior Paul Deasey paced the Colonials with a career-high five goals, followed by four from Petkovic.

GW heads to the Princeton Invite next weekend.
