Retiring U.S. senator to preserve papers at GW

Kent Conrad, D-N.D.

One of the U.S. Senate’s fiscal gurus will give his papers to GW, the University announced Thursday.

Kent Conrad, D-N.D., will retire in January and preserve records of his 26 years in the Senate with GW and the State Historical Society of North Dakota in Bismarck. Conrad earned an M.B.A. from the University in 1975.

University President Steven Knapp will travel to North Dakota for a ceremony with Conrad on Aug. 21.

Conrad, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, has played a starring role in trying to solve the country’s debt crisis. He is a member of the bipartisan “Gang of Six,” which crafts legislation to trim the budget deficit.

He announced in January 2011 that he would not run for re-election.
