J Street loses vendor and director this summer

Just months after campus dining’s most recent overhaul failed to raise revenue, one of J Street’s options will not reopen this fall.

Nosh, the dining hall’s kosher deli, has been shuttered, but the details remain under wraps. University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard skirted questions about what led it to close and what will take its place when classes start later this month.

Nancy Haaga, director of GW’s Campus Support Services, also declined to comment, explaining that full updates about J Street would be sent to students in mid-August.

Chair of the Student Dining Board Michael Morgan attributed the low demand for Nosh as the reason for its closure.

“The student demand for it just wasn’t there, so it only makes sense for Nosh to be replaced with something that is more exciting for students. I havent been clued in as to the exact reason it closed, but its a safe assumption that it just wasn’t providing for students like the other vendors were,” Morgan said.

“There has been some talk of a new vendor going in, there are great options on the table I’m ecstatic about, but nothing has been solidified yet,” he added.

University’s often criticized dining branch will also have to fill its top leadership position this fall. Richard Yokely, the director of campus dining and Sodexo liaison, “is no longer at GW,” Sherrard, said this week. She declined to say what prompted his departure from the University.

“He’s still with Sodexho — just another role,” Sherrard said in an email.

Mohsen Emami, a long-term contractor for GW Dining Services, has been named interim director. Sherrard declined to provide a timeline for when a permanent leader will be chosen.

August marks a full year after the campus dining program ditched fast food options for Sodexo-run vendors in J Street. Sales stagnated last February, the most updated financial information available after a policy was implemented in the spring forbidding J Street from releasing sales information.

Most J Street venues, excluding the Coffee Stop and Bamboo, are closed for the summer and will reopen August 24.
