Train to headline Colonials Weekend

The soft rock band Train, known for radio hits like “Drops of Jupiter,” will headline Colonials Weekend this fall, the University announced Thursday.

The Grammy Award-winning group, which meshes adult-contemporary rock with hints of country music, will perform Oct. 20 at the Smith Center at 9 p.m.

The choice marks a departure from several years of comedians performing during the weekend that brings families to campus. Last year, left-wing jester Bill Maher took the stage, igniting criticism from some conservative student groups. Big names like Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon and Robin Williams have also headlined Colonials Weekend in recent years.

“The University solicits feedback from students and parents regarding Colonials Weekend performances,” Senior Associate Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski said. “This year, one name that came up again and again from both was Train.”

Train, a trio that formed in San Francisco in 1994, was heralded for its second album “Drops of Jupiter,” which debuted at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 in the U.S. The title track won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2002.

Their latest album “California 37” has garnered mixed review from music critics. The band will embark on a North American tour July 10, including a stop in Vienna, Va. on Aug 21.

Tickets can be purchased starting July 9 at 9 a.m. through the University’s Colonials Weekend website.
