A leading sexual equality organization named the GW Hospital a leader Tuesday for providing impartial and comprehensive care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation ranked the hospital as one of the top 234 health care facilities countrywide in its 2012 Healthcare Equality Index, based on equitable care, nondiscrimination efforts and a guarantee of equal visitation rights for same-sex couples and their families, according to a news release.

“Being recognized as a ‘Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality’ is a testament to GW’s commitment to the LGBT community in the Washington Metropolitan region,” Gary Little, medical director for the hospital, said in the release.

The hospital was one of 71 healthcare facilities nationwide to earn a perfect score by the organization’s survey team, a list including Boston University’s Medical Center and New York University’s Langone Medical Center.
