Megan Duffy, a former WNBA point guard and Notre Dame alumna, isleaving her job as assistant coach of the Saint John’s women’s basketball team to become the associate head coach for the Colonials.
An athletics communications spokesperson confirmed Duffy’s hire Monday. The spokesperson spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing a department policy not to speak on the record with media.
“Looking forward to my next journey at George Washington University! Cannot wait to roll up our sleeves and get started,” Duffy tweeted. Her Twitter bio lists her as “Associate Head Coach at George Washington University.”
Duffy competed under newly hired Colonials head coach Jonathan Tsipis at Notre Dame. In his introductory press conference April 6, Tsipis said though he had yet to officially finalize his coaching staff, it would ultimately have Fighting Irish ties.
Duffy was a standout point guard for the Irish from 2003-06, leading Notre Dame to four straight NCAA tournament appearances, including two Sweet Sixteen bids. She finished her career with the Irish as just the third player in Notre Dame history to tally 1,000 points, 500 assists and 200 steals, garnering 1,290 career points.
The point guard wracked up numerous awards during her tenure with Notre Dame, including Associated Press All-American and Kodak All-American honorable mention selections from 2004-06, honors as a finalist for the John Wooden Award her senior season, and a two-time All-BIG EAST first team selection. Duffy also won the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award in 2005-06, awarded annually to the nation’s top point guard that stands below 5-foot-8.
After her time with the Irish, Duffy co-captained the USA Basketball team that nabbed the gold medal in the 2005 World University Games, before being drafted 31st overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2006 WNBA Draft. She competed for the Lynx her rookie season, and spent time with the New York Liberty and international basketball teams before retiring from play in 2009.
Duffy most recently worked for three seasons as the assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Saint John’s University. She helped guide the program to three straight NCAA tournament appearances, including the Red Storm’s appearance in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history this year. Her Saint John’s information page lists her as instrumental in the development of point guard Nadirah McKenith, a key cornerstone of the Red Storm’s offense that’s garnered national praise for her performance on the court.
