Planet Forward, GW’s green-friendly media project, aired its first episode Tuesday on Bloomberg Television – a new partnership bringing the group’s focus on environmental issues to more television screens.

The daily series “Bloomberg West,” anchored out of San Francisco, will feature videos produced by Planet Forward on energy and innovation using user- and student-generated ideas every week.

“We’ve created a collaborative online forum, gathering and creating dialogue around innovative ideas from scientists, business leaders, students and government leaders,” Frank Sesno, the founder of Planet Forward and director of the School of Media and Public Affairs, said. “This partnership allows us to celebrate these ideas and focus on solutions with a wider national audience.”

The episode featured a company working to power energy through underwater turbines in Manhattan’s East River. Planet Forward, which is run by SMPA’s Center for Innovative Media, also produces specials for the Public Broadcasting Service.

With Planet Forward’s team of researchers, experts and business leaders, “Bloomberg West” will continue its reports on innovation but with added concentration on energy and environmental challenges.

“Planet Forward’s community of innovators is a great fit for ‘Bloomberg West,’ which is dedicated to covering advancements in all areas of technology,” Ted Fine, the executive producer of afternoon programming on Bloomberg Television, said in a release.

Sesno said he is optimistic about the new partnership with a television company that “is going to help invent media 2.0” and hopes Planet Forward can take that partnership to a higher level.

“They’re very aggressive in pulling together business models, with a very serious digital presence and broadcast,” Sesno said. “This is a big step forward for us.”
