Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Tuesday that “multiple sources confirmed Monday” that Butler’s move to the Atlantic 10 is “a done deal.”

“A move likely wouldn’t occur until the 2013-14 season, but whenever it happens, it’s a crushing blow for a conference that seemingly overcame a major identity crisis,” the Press-Gazette reported.

But a Butler spokesperson pushed back against the report.

“Any reports are pure speculation,” Jim McGrath said. “We have not made any kind of announcement. The A-10 has not made any kind of announcement.”

Butler initially expressed interest in moving from the Horizon League to the A-10 earlier this month, and will be the replacement for Temple, which is headed to the Big East in 2013. Demovsky said that the Bulldogs likely wouldn’t join the Atlantic 10 until the 2013-14 season.

McGrath denied to confirm Butler’s interest in joining the A-10, but did say the university was aware of the opening in the league following Temple’s impending departure.

“I can’t confirm that we’ve even had any conversations with the A-10,” McGrath said. “We are aware of the changing landscape of college conferences and we try to survey and keep abreast of the situation.”

This season, the Butler men’s basketball team went 20-14 overall, falling in the semifinals of the Horizon League championship to Valparaiso. The Bulldogs extended their postseason streak to seven straight with a bid to this year’s College Basketball Invitational and will host Pittsburgh in the semifinal round Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Prior to this year, Butler made five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament, starting with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2007. The Bulldogs made it to the title game in the NCAA tournament in 2010 and again in 2011, falling to Duke and Connecticut, respectively.
