Pellom sets shooting record

The Colonials’ 67-50 loss at Dayton in the first round of the A-10 tournament Tuesday night wasn’t how David Pellom wanted his season to end, but the defeat solidified an accomplishment for the junior forward– setting the new single-season shooting record at GW.

Pellom, who scored a team-high 18 points and gathered 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double in six games, finished his season averaging 68.5 percent from the floor. It was good enough to set a new men’s basketball program single-season shooting percentage record. Pellom knocked off former Colonial Joe Holup’s 1995 to 1956 record, when he shot 64.7 percent from the field.
On his way to setting the new record, Pellom went 7-of-13 from the field, buckling down to return to a strong offensive performance after missing two layups in the opening minutes of the game.
“At the beginning, I felt myself rushing too much. I missed two easy, wide open layups. I felt down on myself, and the coaches just kept telling me if you missed a layup, just move onto the next,” Pellom said.
On a season where the Colonials saw their strongest players sometimes falter during games, Pellom emerged as a renewed force on the court for GW. His enhanced performance at the net and on the boards was one the junior forward attributed to hard work in practice, and battling hard in the post, an approach emphasized by first-year head coach Mike Lonergan.
ESPN currently ranks Pellom at fourth in the NCAA in field goal percentage. He averaged 10.1 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game on the season.
