Chandler representative: Departure from team related to ‘time management issues’

A representative for former Colonials center Erica Chandler said today the sophomore’s departure from the women’s basketball program was due to “time management issues,” not a larger disciplinary problem.

Chandler left the team earlier this year after a lengthy suspension due to what head coach Mike Bozeman called a “violation of team rules.” Athletics communications confirmed that Chandler had been dismissed from the team but declined to provide further information on the grounds or circumstances surrounding the center’s departure.

A Chandler family representative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she was not an official spokesperson, stressed that Chandler’s dismissal from the team was not the result of a violation of University or NCAA policies.

“[Chandler] is a dedicated student-athlete at George Washington University, and she had a few issues with regards to time management but other than that, she wanted to stress that she did not violate any University policies or break any NCAA rules. And she is in good academic standings,” the representative said. “The only issue she had was with time management issues she had, but there was no drug, alcohol, violence, any of that sort. Nothing. No felonies committed, no NCAA rules broken, no University rules broken, etc.”

Chandler intends to take the court again soon, her representative added, whether that be for the Colonials or at another university.

“She does intend on being back on the court in the near future, playing the game she loves,” the representative said. “Wherever her future takes her. Right now, she’s open and she will be working in the off-season with a professional trainer. She is open at this point as to whether she’s going to remain at GW or move on and play for a different university. That is still to be decided as of yet.”

Chandler played 47 minutes in nine games last season, averaging 0.9 points and 0.9 rebounds. The representative said the discussion of her dismissal was “ongoing” but that it was “basically team rules” that were at the root of the center’s departure.
