The Colonials hosted St. Lawrence yesterday, and while the women’s squash teams rebounded from five straight match losses with a 9-0 sweep, the men’s team fell to St. Lawrence 7-2.

The women’s team won each of their matches in straight sets, allowing only two Saints players to reach nine points in any of the games. Sophomores Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes, sitting at the top of the ladder for the Colonials, set the tone with commanding opening victories, and the rest of GW’s roster echoed their performances. At the No. 7 slot, sophomore Maya Nair allowed just three points across two games with an 11-3, 11-0 and 11-6 victory over her opponent. Freshman Adriana Calderon followed with an equally imposing victory at the No. 8 spot, earning the same scores across her games for the match victory.

The men’s team couldn’t echo that performance, despite earning victories at the top two slots from juniors Islam El-Fiky and Omar Sobhy. El-Fiky and Sobhy grabbed their 11th and 10th victories, respectively, in straight sets, but were the only two Colonials to defeat their St. Lawrence opponents on the way to a 7-2 defeat.

The squash teams next head to Maine Jan. 27 to face multiple opponents over three days of play.
