GW to host Obama Classic

President Barack Obama, Craig Robinson, men's basketball, Oregon
President Obama and his family watch GW's match against Oregon State in the Smith Center Nov. 28, 2009. The President will return to GW's court for the Obama Classic Dec. 12.

The Smith Center will play host to the President’s Obama Classic, a campaign fundraiser featuring 30 current and former NBA players, The New York Post reports.

The game will pit a number of NBA superstars against each other in support of the Obama Victory Fund, the President’s campaign website announces. Among those confirmed as participants include Amar’e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony,  Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Ray Allen, Chris Bosh, Paul Pierce, Doc Rivers and Blake Griffen. Spike Lee is listed as a special guest coach, and more players and coaches will be announced soon, the website said.

Tickets for the fundraiser start at $200, with “premier seat packages costing more than $30,000,” the Post said. The event is aided by the “ongoing NBA lockout, which positions the match at D.C.’s George Washington University stadium as the best chance of the year to see top basketball outside of the college game,” the Post reported, though a tentative NBA labor deal was reached this morning that could begin the season by Christmas Day.

The game is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.
