After going 2-0 in doubles play Tuesday, junior Alexander van Gils and sophomore Ulrik Thomsen split their two matches in the final qualifying round at the ITA/D’Novo All-American Championships Wednesday, and were picked as the No. 1 alternate for Thursday’s main doubles draw.

The duo will play in the 32-team event if injury prevents another squad from competing. They opened play Wednesday with an 8-6 victory over North Carolina’s Joey Burkhardt and William Parker,  advancing to the final qualifying round of doubles play. Thomsen and van Gils then faced Oklahoma’s No. 1 doubles team of Costin Paval and Dane Webb. After a back-and-forth match, the Colonials dropped the match 9-8 (5), in a tiebreaker.

“Ulrik and Alex have been playing their best doubles to date,” head coach Greg Munoz said. “They have an unconventional style of play and that’s the key to their success.”

Thomsen and van Gils were the last GW players left competing after freshman teammate Francisco Dias fell Tuesday to Georgia’s Hernus Pieters, 6-1, and 7-6 (5) in a tiebreaker in the second set. Later that day, Dias teamed up with senior Ugur Atalay, facing gainst Auburn’s Daniel Cochrane and Dennis Lengsfeld, and ultimately falling 9-8.
