GW finishes last in cross country season opener

The Colonials opened their season at Mount St. Mary’s Duals on Friday, and both the men’s and women’s programs finished sixth out of six teams competing at the meet.

Junior Heather Stevens led GW, completing the 5K course in 19:25.38 and finishing in 13th place of 61 runners. Fellow junior Julia Weir was the next highest-ranked from GW, finishing in 25th place in 19:53.12. Rounding out the top five women’s runners for GW were three freshmen in their collegiate debut. Erica Halvorson finished 37th in 20:24.04, Kathryn Luker finished 45th in 21:01.56 and Paige Peltan finished 48th in 21:11.75.

Freshman Marco Siragusa was the top finisher from the men’s program, finishing 48th of 84 on the 5K course in 16:28.92. Sophomore Rex Sheikh followed, finishing in 65th place in 17:01.07 and fellow sophomore James Stern came in 68th place in 17:16.12. Freshman John Perrino (17:41.12) and sophomore Jacob Levine (18:37.98) completed GW’s top five.

The Colonials next travel to the Navy Invitational Sept. 17.
