What We’re Listening To

Hatchet reporter Hayley Burgess shares her latest musical obsessions.

D.C.’s music scene has changed a lot over the years, but we do have a couple of great venues that always seem to have an incredible lineup. Here are some songs from bands whose shows you won’t want to miss this fall.

Up Up Up
Givers
Oct. 18 @ Black Cat; $13 advance, $15 day of. Opener: Lord Huron

This is without a doubt one of the catchiest songs I’ve heard all summer. It’s both fun and light. This Givers show is bound to be a blast. It could be easy to write them off as another light indie band but the more songs I hear the more I realize that’s not the case. Aside from the fact that they have two separate drummers, what really makes this song stand out is the female vocalist, whose ever so raspy voice is a refreshing addition to the band. Trust me when I say this show is one you won’t want to miss.

Colours
Grouplove
Sept. 9 @ Black Cat; $13 advance, $15 day of. Opener: Young Man

This might just be the hipster ballad of the season. It fits all the requirements – lyrics that are upbeat and sad at the same time, catchy but not annoying. It’s performed by a band of shaggy-haired, passionate band mates who appropriately paint their faces, rip their clothes and bop around in the music video. It’s a song you’ll listen to over and over again, no matter what mood you’re in. Grouplove has been known in the past to put on a mean live show, and this one shouldn’t be any different. Expect lots of jumping, dancing and an all around great time.

The Airborne Toxic Event
Nov. 22 @ 9:30 Club; $25. Openers: Mona, The Drowning Man

This was the song I heard a million times on my car’s radio this summer, but never knew who sang it. By the time I finally caught the name of the band, I had already belted it out more times than I could count. The lyrics are relatable and easy to memorize (perfect for singing along), and the guitar is amazing. Most of the band’s songs have pretty fast beats, so the show should be anything but boring. I already know that for this one, I’ll be that annoying person in the crowd singing louder than the band. The show is not until November, but I’d recommend buying your tickets now. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one sells out.
