Associate athletic director announces departure

The associate athletic director for development announced Friday he will retire after 13 years with the department of athletics.

Dominic “Dom” Perno’s departure is effective June 30, the same date as the planned retirement of athletic director Jack Kvancz.

Perno’s retirement comes during a period of transition for the athletic department, characterized by an ongoing review intended to create a strategic plan for the future of GW athletics. The department is also witnessing a change in the leadership of its flagship program as Mike Lonergan takes the helm of the men’s basketball team. Longeran was hired after the departure of Karl Hobbs, who played under Perno when the associate athletic director was the men’s basketball coach at the University of Connecticut.

“I have loved working at GW and will always treasure the many relationships forged with outstanding alumni and our excellent student-athletes,” Perno said. “I will miss everyone dearly.”

Perno was hired as assistant athletic director in 1997 and promoted to associate athletic director in 2006, where he oversaw fundraising and marketing efforts for the Colonials. He directed the formation of the Colonials Athletic Club and spearheaded all fundraising and special events for GW athletics.

“Dom has represented the department of athletics and the George Washington University with class and dignity. He has been a good friend and a trusted advisor who will be greatly missed,” Kvancz said. “On behalf of the Department of Athletics, I thank him for his dedicated service and wish him well as he begins a new chapter.”

Before coming to GW, Perno was head coach of the UConn Huskies and later a television sports broadcaster.
